GREEN SPACES

The climate crisis has a massive impact on communities across urban Africa. Due to the scarcity of space in cities, competition for land use increases. This makes it harder to find room for green spaces which are important for creating a vibrant, attractive, and sustainable city. Dreamtown’s Green Space Programme addresses issues faced by young people in slum communities related to the climate crisis.

Our Green Space programmes currently take place in Uganda and Kenya and focus on three strategic pillars:

We support green spaces that are adaptive towards climate change, provide a healthy environment, and green chill out spaces where youth can meet.

Case: In Kenya we support the organisation Komb Green who have developed an amazing green park along the banks of Nairobi River. The park is designed to minimize the impact of flooding, and includes urban agriclture and chill out spaces for the community.

We support green entrepreneurs who engage in businesses such as agripreneruship and waste collection - businesses that increase young people’s income and at the same time have a positive impact on the environment.

Case: Together with the Ugandan organisation Network for Active Citizens we support young people across Kampala to engage in urban agriculture and set up green public spaces with demonstration gardens.

We engage in evidence based advocacy on climate action: We do research on the effects of climate change and the impact of green space interventions and broadcast knowledge.

Case: In Mathare, one of the most environmentally deprived communities in Nairobi, we do research with Mathare Social Justice Centre to identify relevant green interventions.
